5-35-4, BOOK 5, BOOK OF BEAUTY, SUNDARA KAAND`A, CHAPTER 35, VERSE 4:
Kiidris`am tasya samsthaanam
ruupam Raamasya kiidris`ham
Katham uuruu, katham baahuu,
Lakshman`asya ca s`amsa mee
CONTEXT Hanuman went to Lanka in search of Sita. He found her in Ashoka Garden. After much hesitation, he presents himself before Sita. After making some enquiries, Sita wants Hanuma to describe Rama and Lakshman`a. The funniest part is, she wants Hanuma to describe Rama's thigh also. She asks:
GIST "Pl. tell me: What is the appearance (samsthaanam) and form (ruupam) of Rama? How are his thighs and arms? Also about Lakshmana's."
5-35-19, Hanuman's reply (This verse is one among 18 verses which describe Rama's appearance:
Catush kalaha catur leekhaha catush kishkuhu catuh samaha
Caturdas`asama dvandvaha catur damsht`aha catur gatihi.
GIST He has four "kala's". He has four "leekhas". He has four "kishkus". He has four "samaha". He has fourteen equal pairs. (hands, eyes, nostrils, thighs etc.)
BLOGGER'S VIEWS
It is not clear why Sita is interested in Hanuman's describing Rama's thighs! Anyway, even after using 18 verses, Hanuman did not even name the parts by "thighs" except vaguely mentioning about "equal pairs".
