#116 Ambarisha- throw away heaps of gold and gems and buy a human

Book 1, bAlakAnDa, Chapter 61, sarga 61, verse 13.
1-61-13
King Ambarisha said to the sage RicIka: Oh Great man! Sell me a son of yours for a hundred thousand cows.

gavaam shata sahasreNa
vikriiNiiSe sutam yadi
pashoH arthe mahaabhAga
krita krityO asmi bhArgava

1-61-14:
I have visited many places, but I could not get an animal. It will be apt for you to give a son of yours for a price.
sarve parigataa deshaa
yaj~niyam na labhe pashum
daatum arhhasi muulyena
sutam ekam ito mama

1-61-15
(Ricika was UNwilling to sell his eldest son).
evam ukto mahaatejaa RiciikaH
tu abraviit vacaH
na aham jyeSTham
nara shreSTha vikriiNiiyaam kathamcana



1-61-16
Hearing Ricika's words his wife said:
Riciikasya vacaH shrutvaa
teShaam mAtA mahAtmanAm
uvaaca nara shaarduulam
ambariiSam idam vacaH

avikreyam sutam jyeSTham
bhagavaan aaha bhaargavaH
1-61-17
I am unwilling to sell my youngest son.
mama api dayitam viddhi
kaniSTham shunakam prabho
tasmaat kaniiyasam putram
na daasye tava paarthiva

1-61-18 & 19
Ruchika agreed that they were not willing to sell their eldest or the youngest son.
praayeNa hi narashreSTha
jyeSThaaH pitrIshu vallabhaaH
maatrINaam ca kaniiyaa.msaH
tasmaat rakSe kaniiyasam.



1-61-20
Hearing the words of parents, the middle son Shunasepa said

ukta vaakye munau tasmin
muni patnyaam tathaiva ca
shunaHshepaH svayam raama (This Rama is Shri Rama. Sage Satananda was narrating the story to Rama).
madhyamo vaakyam abraviit

1-61-21
pitaa jyeSTham avikreyam
maataa ca aaha kaniiyasam
vikretam madhyamam manye
raajaputra nayasva maam.

Father said that he didn't want to sell the eldest son. Mother said that she didn't wnat to sell the youngest son. I am left out. I am deemed saleable. Oh King, hence take me.

1-61-22
atha raajaa mahaabaaho
vaakya ante brahma vaadinaH
hiraNyasya suvarNasya
koTibhii ratna raashibhiH

The king gave the spiritualist (brahma vAdinaha) ten million each heaps of gold and gems.

1-61-23
The king gave 100,000 hundred thousand cows, took Shunshepa and left happily.
gavaam shata sahasreNa
shunaHshepam nareshvaraH
grihiitvaa parama priito
jagaama raghunandana.

1-61-24
satvaraha-without delay the King mounted his chariot, making Shunashepa ascend the chariot.

ambariiSaH tu raajarhSii
ratham aaropya satvaraha
shunaHshepam mahaatejaa
jagaama aashu mahaayashaaH.
